Avery Dulles Passes On to His Reward

I just read that Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., died this morning. His work—ecumenical, thoughtful, profound, and always charitable—has been as important for Protestants as it has been for Catholics, and his death is a sad loss to the church on earth.

I had the privilege of being in New York over a month ago at the ECT meeting where all the participants received in a typed paragraph the last words (literally, due to the disease that took away all forms of communication) uttered by Cardinal Dulles. In a brief paragraph, typed by the sisters that cared for him, he encouraged the group to continue the efforts begun by this ecumenical group and expressed genuine hope for more to come. A wonderful scholar, sensitive ecumenist, and contributer to all forms of the Church.

    Requiesce In Pacem.
