Thoughts upon Finishing Cormac McCarthy’s Novel Blood Meridian

This little snippet from the Wikipedia page about sums it up.

After reading Blood Meridian, Richard Selzer declared that McCarthy “is a genius – also probably somewhat insane.”

Fun. I’ll have to pick that one up. What else of his have you read (besides The Road)?

I’ve read the Border Trilogy, which comprises All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing, and Cities of the Plain. Of those three, All the Pretty Horses is probably the best. This is all his later work, which all takes place in the Southwest. All of his earlier work takes place farther southeast (Tennessee, etc.). Interestingly, Blood Meridian is his first novel to take place in the Southwest, and the protagonist, at the beginning of the novel, journeys from Tennessee to New Mexico.

By way of warning: Blood Meridian is one of the most violent novels I’ve ever read. Because of that, and because of the sometimes-turgid style of Blood Meridian, I would suggest inoculating yourself with All the Pretty Horses before exposing yourself to the much-more-potent Blood Meridian.
